Unresolvable mail address
A copy of your message is being returned to you because one or more of
the addresses you specified could not be recognized as addresses that are
understood by, or reachable from, this system.
Typically this means that a UUCP site you are trying to reach does not exist
in the UUCP maps, or that a domain name does not exist in the DNS, and
therefore cannot receive mail.
Please check your addresses for spelling errors, or consult with your local
postmaster or system administrator.
This is an automatic message.
P.S.: In bizarre circumstances you will see the address report below
rewritten as site.dom!user@%s. This happens when your envelope
address looks like user@site.dom, where site.dom is not a valid
hostname.

I recently installed Iomega's "Ditto" backup software on my 755CD. The
program has a "scheduler" and "instant backup" program intended to run in
the background. It works absolutely great and I was able to back up my
HD in only 2+ hours. Here's my problem, now.
I am not too "fluent" in Windows 3.1, so my question might appear
elementary. The damn Ditto software has created icons that appear at the
bottom of my screen at Windows bootup- as if they were minimized programs
that were started in the STARTUP window. Unfortunately, the programs
don't appear in the startup menu at all. I suspect that somewhere in
Windows 3.1 there a file, similar to a autoexec.bat file that loads
program items separately from the startup items in the startup program
group.
Could someone help me out here and tell me how to get rid of the damn
unrequested and unwanted items that now inhabit my screen? BTW- I've
been through every icon and program in the Ditto program group and cannot
find anything to "turn off" the damn icons there. I'm frustrated and sure
would appreciate some advice here.

Look at your \windows\win.ini file in the first section [windows].
There should be lines like 'run=c:\ditto\schedule.exe'
Either remove these or comment them out (put a ; before each line) and
they will no longer be loaded on startup

I have the same attitude toward these things (it does the same
thing in WIndows 95). Perhaps I dislike them more since the product
doesn't work on my TP 700C and there is no uninstall for the
software.
However, it is easy to do what you want. In Win95, you can right
button the icon and a menu which include "close" comes up; there
should be something similar in Win 3. If you want to stop it from
starting up, look in \windows\win.ini for something like
LOAD=D:\QBWIN\DITTO.EXE
That's the line that is starting it up automatically.
I don't know why they needed to do that.

Look in the WIN.INI file for two lines:
load=
run=
I think you will find what you need in run=, as that will start a program up
minimized. On your Thinkpad C:\THINKPAD\FUELWIN.EXE will be in that line as
well.
Please let's not start a OS war here again. I have answered the question,
let it die.

Tom,
Have a look at your win.ini file in your \windows\ directory.
Specifically, look for load= and run= statements. You can comment them
out with a simple semi-colon at the beginning of each line. That way you
can have them if you want them by removing the semi-colon.
Take care,

it's bad enough with the OS wars!) - no problem, my TP750 has audio

a few hours trying to figure out how to get sound from the CD unit

The audio that comes from a music CD is different that the audio you get
from, say, Warcraft. The audio from a CDROM is digital, and the PC has to
decode the information and turn it into sound. All of the work to play an
audio CD is done by the CDROM player itself. That's why you can start
playing a music CD, shut down the Laptop, and in most cases you can get the
music to keep going.
In order to listen to the audio through your Thinkpad speakers you would
have to get a patch coard, run it from the Audio Out on the back of the
CDROM, and into the Microphone jack (or Audio In jack) on the Thinkpad, and
then give it a go. The audio will probably sound like crap, but it should
work with a little messing around. Basically all you are doing is patching
your audio directly to the speakers in the Thinkpad. It is easier to just
go and punish the person who took you headphones! :P

I was. My Keyboard letters all came off, pretty much. I just got my
keyboard replaced by EZ-Serve. Not only is the tactile feedback
better, but the letters on the keyboard are brighter and nicer than
before.
EZ serve is fast and painless. I sent it in Monday afternoon, got it
back on Friday morning, via fed ex. Can't beat that with a stick.
Later.

Thanks again for the instructions on how to get the pesky icons off my
TP755CD's screen. As suggested, I checked the "load" line in win.ini and
found the culpert. Now that this is behind me, I'm off on another quest.
Some of you may remember that I coupled a GPS receiver to my machine via the
serial port and used it on a long trip to plot my location on a extrememly
detailed map that came on CD ROM.
I also have a tiny B/W TV camera that's about the size of matchbox and have
used it (held on to the TP's case with velcro) to take "snapshots" via the
video in connection.
The problem with this is that the camera needs an external power supply in
the 8-14 volt range. It only pulls about 250 milliwats. To supply this, I
made up a rechargable battery pack and hold it to the laptop's case with
velcro as well. Frankly, this solution seems bad and I'd like to tap the
laptops' battery for the power connection.
Here's my question- do any of you all know which pins on which ports might
carry battery voltage in the 1/2 amp range? I read a comment once where a
person mentioned the mouse port as supplying voltage, but I am not sure.
In addition, the tiny plug on the video connector is fine, but the magnet
surrounding the wire (to comply with FCC specs) is cumbersome and a pain in
the rump. Does anyone know what havoc I'd wreak if I did a "magnetectomy?"
Finally, the plug going into the "video in" socket has three pins plus the
case itself as a ground, or "common." Has anyone dissected the "S"
video/composite adapter at the other end of the short wire to determine
which wires or pins actually carry the composite signal to the "video in"
port. By knowing this, I could further reduce the size and bulk of the
connection by directly soldering the two conductors from the camera to just
the tiny pin via a short length of coax.
It sure would be nice if the ports came with a schematic <grin>. I'll keep
you all posted of my progress.

Have you tried loading both laptop and desktop from puma's
installation disk. This is how I did it. Then you must get your ir port on
the laptop right. I use com2 2F8 int 3. If you have pcmcia cards
installed, remove them till you have it working.
Then on the desktop end make sure that your ir receiver is
externally powered. I found with the Adaptec ir port, that external power
is needed to go at top speed. Without external power the unit would cause
program lock-up during transferring of files. Also try running your port
speeds at slower baud rates till you get everything up and running.

Yes. On a rotary dial only line (are there really such things
anymore?) or on some PBX lines which don't recognize the standard touch
tones.
