Sometimes, I see that there are different serial numbers / part numbers given
on IBM products that are essentially identical. I'm not exactly sure, but
this might be why you can order a part as a "spare" opposed to one that might
be a "second" battery.

I've got an extra IBM 360 MB (odd size, I know) drive I'd like to get =
rid of. It's exactly the same width and length as the one that fits in =
my 755, only shorter--I think it's a 12mm height. I've also got my old =
170 megger on the block if anyone's interested.

the two part numbers are:
1) the part number-- used for ordering a part from pc direct (some retailers
also use ibm part numbers), and
2) the fru (field replacement unit) number-- sometimes referred to as the
'fru
part number,' which can be confusing. fru numbers were intended to be used
only by ibm'ers to call their parts department in boulder, co. when they need
something to perform warranty service. that system has evolved to one where
any customer can call boulder parts and order using the fru (assuming it's
still in boulder. it may have moved). last time i tried this, both sides
were
adamant about which number you use. boulder knew nothing of any number other
than a fru & pc direct knew nothing of any number other than a pn. neither
could give you the other number for your part.
the confusing part is that the fru is often written on a part as 'p/n' rather
than 'fru'. the funny part is that there's often a price difference between
the two. i seem to recall that fru's from boulder were usually cheaper.

Hi... I've got a 755C [1] that I just connected to a LAN here at work.
To connect to the stuff at work I had to upgrade to Windows for
Workgroups 3.11. [2] The good news is that I got all that working.
The bad news is that I have to power the machine off and back on
every time I connect or disconnect from the network. Plus the suspend
and hibernate functions no longer work at all (connected or not).
Not to mention the fact that I can't even boot the machine if I
remove the LAN card (it boots, but it won't get as far as bringing
up WfWG...
Has anyone else bumped into something similar? Any suggestions would
be greatly appreciated...

Based on present and past IBM delivery performance, if the Micron
machines are on a 8+ week backorder, then it will be 10-20 weeks
before we see the new IBM 760ED ThinkPad. Wanna bet? I say mid-June
the earliest and NOT in quantity...just a few units spread out
over a bunch of IBM resellers. Quantity? I'd bet August...
just in time for release of the "next generation". :-(
So, I'll spend $8,000 for a 760ED in mid-August that will drop to
$5500 by October 1st on the heels of IBM's next generation announcement
of ThinkPads that we won't see until next Spring.
Although there might be isolated cases of big city resellers or small
vendors having a few 760CD-120s here or there for sale, IBM has not been
shipping ANY ThinkPads to their larger distributors. I buy most of my
ThinkPads through CDW (Computer Discount Warehouse) in Chicago because of
their reasonable prices and excellent support and they are a large IBM
reseller. Their IBM rep told them that IBM stopped production of 760
ThinkPads in February and won't start shipping again until at least the
first week of April.
I'm sure that Intel's release of the P5-133 in the TCP package and the
Mobile Triton chipset in limited quantities definitely has an effect on
IBM's ThinkPad production, but there seems to be other shortages (or
production problems) here they're not talking about.
On the other hand, having worked for large computer manufacturers here
in Silicon Valley for many years, I understand how difficult it is for
a computer manufacturer to design and build these sophisticated machines
while technology continues to change so quickly. By the time it takes
for them to "tool up", buy components, and produce machines in quantity,
the technology is already "old". Obviously, very frustrating for them
too. Remember when it took at least 24 months to bring a new product
from design to production? Probably closer to six months now...no
wonder manufacturers in this industry seem to disappear so quickly.
I guess I'm just a spoiled consumer..."I want it, and I want it NOW!".

HELP HELP HELP
My Screen has gone dead !
I have a TP 701 and today morning when I booted it the following happened
ever since:
Push Power Switch
Machine starts counting RAM, Screen OK
Normal Exit codes are Diplayed
HDD Starts Booting, Screen goes dark before 'Booting MS-DOS' can be displayed
Normal Boot, I can tell by HDD noise and PCMCIA Bleeps
Screen stays dark
When I Enter Bios normal display again
Bios settings correct: LCD display, normal parameters for brightness etc.
Leaving the Bios gives me back dark screen.
Machine is in normal working, I can hear my Windows startup sound etc.
I saw a similar posting, but ignored it. Now I seem to have the same prob.
If this has happened to you please mail me, but since our university is
adding new computer hardware right now, the mail might not go through.
If I don't respond your message, please repost until I can give you a
feedback-mail. OK ? I will be monitoring my Mailbox every 6 hours.

I haven't had that experience. Suspend works ok, and the green LED on
the 3Com's pigtail goes out until I resume.
Disconnection from the network is ok, but to switch to a PPP phone
connection I have to get out of Windows and switch the winsock file.

Same here. I suspect it will take a switch to bypass something in an init
file.

Ignoring the other issues (we all face them), a quick explanation
of the dilemma:
Any quick course in Business Strategy and you'll see that virtually
every industry typically has a 1 to 3 *really* major players, with some
selection of 2nd tier players behind them and perhaps a huge number of
smaller ones.
In computers (without slicing it down the individual sections like
"Mail order" or "notebooks", which you could do), clearly IBM is the major
player.
The funny thing is this: Usually that major player(s) are *NOT*
the undisputed leader in any given field. Rather, they sort of "set the
tone" or overall mood/standard for the industry, while the rest set some
other standards and the many others compete in niche segments. Other
companies may have a cheaper product, another may specialize in something
else, etc.
But ask yourself: Does IBM make the fastest computers in the
world? No--that title belonged to Cray. Does IBM make the least expensive
ones? Definitely not. Does IBM lead the market in software? Not in PC's,
but they have a respectable showing (now that they bought Lotus). Do they
provide the best systems integration? Probably not, but they're certainly
no slouch.
You're probably seeing the sense of it here, and clearly this is
the case in the computer industry. The ThinkPads line is not the fastest
notebook available, nor is it the cheapest, nor is it the lightest. But is
it overall one hell of a machine? You better believe it--a far better
overall package than almost any of its competitors (okay, I'm biased--but
I've been burned by other machines and I'm very happy with the 'Pads I've
owned).
Basically put, "leading the industry" doesn't mean you're the best
at everything--it means you're the best at putting everything together (at
least in this case).

Hi Folks,
I have the same doubt that should I upgrade the BIOS? Everything seem
to work now for me at least. I am not sure would the upgrade do me any
good or any worse! I also have Linux installed, the boot message from
it complained something about BIOS32. Although I could boot Linux
without any problem, but I wonder if upgrading the BIOS would help or
even improve the performance.

Well maybe CDW has wonderful prices and support, but just one problem,
from your description, they don't have machines!!!
I have bought all my thinkpads from Rockwell Computers in NYC. Always
a few days after the announcement, at reasonable prices.

I had the same problem on the 701:
disconnect the machine from the power supply and remove the
battery pack for some hours (sometimes half an hour may be
enough but better wait...)
Everthing should be ok. If this doesn't help disconnect the
cmos battery (tis should be done by a technician, says IBM.
Probably you won't have the kind of screwdrivers you will
need for the TP housing.)
The problem probably got to do with the missing reset button.

I use 3com's 3c589b with the Linux 1.2.13 kernal. It works great.

Well, can't help with Linux, but I can suggest an url that will help you
with OS/2.
Point your web browser at:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/ps/products/os2/drivers/
and follow the link to /pcmcia
There is a European site, but I won't give the url because a notice says
that it will be shut down at the end of Feb and it directs you to the url I
gave. (the site is up Mar27 96 though).
In general, I've had good luck with a variety of ethernet adpaters made by
Xircom and 3com. Both have good OS/2 support.
Oh, and where can I get a 500 _GIGABYTE_ drive for my Laptop? I want one!

Xircom requires developers sell their soul and sign an NDA so you're
unlikely to ever see Xircom cards work with Linux. 3Com seems to be
the most popular choice. I've had no problems with IBM's Credit Card
Adapter II under OS/2 and Linux.

I don't think Xircom is supported by PCMCIA card services in Linux.
I've had great luck with my 3Com EtherLink III 3c589c on my 760c running
Linux 1.2.13 and 1.3.68. It supports both 10baseT and 10base2.
