I'm responding to my own comment, but I should point out the 701C
uses the "BlackMatrix" screen that was not yet available until the 755
series--much better than the 750C (IMO), and I had the opportunity to
compare them head-up against each other for 3 weeks before I sold my 750C.

The best answer--based on in-depth analysis of the complex and subtle

All this talk about what to buy, when to buy it ...
I think it's off the point. If you don't buy now but wait 3 months then there
will be some other hot thing just around the corner. Always.
Buy a computer and when the ink is dry on the cheque it'll be old and the
price
just a rip-off. I have a harder time finding good software and much more
a use for those expensive toys.

Re: DualScan - TFT
It's not just sharpness or contrast. There is another point: the
DS-screen is far from being reflection-free. Sitting in a bright
room and wearing a white (T-)shirt is something like a torture for
your eyes... If the 701C is the same kind of Black Matrix as in the
755CX (apart from the resolution) then it's worth the money.

I have a 701CS and the main problem I have with the screen is
brightness. It looks fine in a dimly lit room, but in a bright office it
can be a strain. I think the brightness varies too. When the screen is
cold it is noticeably dimmer and has some streaks. It seems to warm up
during operation and right now it is warm and it looks great. It looks
perfectly "sharp" to me, but I haven't seen the TFT screen. Of course
there is trailing of moving images, but since I don't play video games
much it just makes the arrow harder to see when using the trackpoint. The
screen is a little directional - at 45 degrees it becomes difficult to
see. This hasn't been inconvenient for me, though. Considering I saved
$450 to $650, I am happy with my decision. The money I saved went into
16MB more memory.

I'm interested in buying Panasonic's 2X PCMCIA
CD-ROM drive for my Thinkpad 701C. Anybody
out there have one for sale? Audio CD's can
be played with this too, right? Does it
run off of batteries, AC adaptor, and PCMCIA
power?

Subject: Thinkpad 701Cs Hidden File
Message-Id: <Pine.3.89.9604051704.A14801-0100000@mary.iia.org>
I recently bought a Thinkpad 701CS which came with OS/2 and Windows 3.11.
I deleted the OS/2 using the "button" in the Windows OS/2 group. Looking
at my hard disk I find one large file in the root directory that I can't
identify and wonder if it's a leftover from OS/2, or what else it's used
for. It's a hidden, system, read-only file named "ea data. sf" (with
spaces in the name and extension). It's 10Meg so if I don't need it I
certainly want to get rid of it, but I've discovered through painful
experience that not knowing what it is doesn't mean it shouldn't be
there. There's also a small file named"wp root. sf". Can anyone shed some
light on what they are?
Thanks for any help!

Yes, that is an os/2 file, and you can delete it.
You can call the 800 numbe and they will walk you through it, here is
what I remember of it....
You will have to use the attrib command on it,
attrib -r -s -h ea*.sys
and then I think you will have to del ea*?sys
to get rid of it, it needs the wildcards to delete it.
Good luck, like I said, call the 800 line and they will walk you through it..

They're both OS/2 files and assuming you want to get rid of OS/2,
can be safely deleted.
Since there are spaces in the name, you may have to use wildcards
when typing in the "delete" command in DOS. For that matter, you may want
to try using the "deltree" command.
Its been a long time since my last effort to dump OS/2, but I think
this will get you through.

I installed it recently on my 750C. The instructions at
http://peipa.essex.ac.uk/tp-linux/tp-linx#008#ux.html are quite ok.
Use the 2.0 compatible bootdisk you find there and follow the instructions
regarding "changing the disk when it says
uncompressing..."#008##008##008##008# linux.,.#008##008#.."
Then you can use the color install disk a#008#(and the rest oif#008##008#f
the disks) from
the slackware 3.0 distribution, which makes the install a little easier.
If you use a newer kernel (since 1,.#008##008#.3.50 something...) you can use
power management too, and #008##008##008##008##008##008#. Good luck!
Regards,
Erik
