As silly as it seems, an external 1GB+ drive in a parallel box might
be what you are looking for. Princing for an external drive box with
parallel interface is ~$100(US) plus >1GB(more with compression) ~$300.
Reasonable price and quite fast, plus no heavy power supply issues.

Big question: Do you need quick access to your backed up data?
If yes, then you should stick with an "active" backup based on disk,
i.e. magneto optical or convensional hard disk. Best bang for the
buck is Pinnacle Micro's new Apex 4.6GB uncompressed for ~$1,700 with
additional 4.6GB disks for ~$200. That's $0.37/MB to start and
$0.04/MB there after!
If no, consider the vast assortment of tape backups.

The above note is from experiences with our publications people you
have tried to maintain libraries on DAT, the fastest/largest of the tapes.
It does not work practically. 15min+ does not compare to 1/2 sec
favorably _esp_ when you are looking for multiple files.

I would agree the network backup is probably the cheapest/safest but
it appears that you might be away from your desk?
