If you open a Word document that thinks its template is on drive A:,
it will read drive A: every now and then as you edit.

There are quite a few programs that have configureable file search
directories, and any of them could be the source of the drive.

Check the configuration for whatever program seems most active when
it occurs.  For instance, if it is at boot, maybe you have a reference
to drive A: in the Win95 start menu, etc.  The existence of symbolic
links in Win95 means these problems can be not-so-obvious at times...
