cigarette lighter adapter for my TP?

hi.  i've been thinking about taking a road trip with the
'pad, and i wonder if any of you have experience with using
a cigarette lighter adapter with an IBM laptop.

this is the sort of thing that's theroretically a piece of
cake: cars put out 12 volts, computers run on 5-12 volts, 
probably the battery charges at no more than 18 volts 
(but i'm not really sure).  however there's lots of noise
and fluctuation in car electrical systems (especially if
the car is 26 years old) so i worry about frying things.

does IBM manufacture such a device?  i would trust them more
than a third party.  any recommendations or horror stories
you have would be appreciated.
