Saying hello
Dear All,
I have just discovered, and subscribed to, this mailing list, and I was
encouraged to introduce myself..... so that is what I am doing.
I bought my ThinkPad 755CX4 (the cut price one with the 640x480 screen and
no DSP chip) about five months ago and have spent most of the time since
gradually getting my operating system(s) sorted out. For those that aren't
sure that has a 75MHz Pentium processor, 8Mb of RAM, 540Mb disk and a 10.4"
TFT 640x480 (the 755CX1 is the same but has 800x600 screen and DSP chip
giving modem and sound).
When I got it I was quite keen to get to grips with OS/2 Warp, but
unfortunately the TP was delivered (brand new) with about 4.5Mb of EA
checkdisk files already on the disk and OS/2 was basically trashed. To cut
a rather long story short I now have OS/2 Warp Connect which is nearly
sorted out to let me use the LAN at work and use a ppp dial in connection
when I am at home or travelling. Unfortunately all this takes a heavy toll
on memory so I upgraded by 8Mb so I now have 16 Mb.
As if that wasn't enough I allowed a friend to persuade me into creating
another disk partition to install Slackware Linux, so I now have about 400Mb
for OS/2 and another 140Mb or so for that. Getting that installed wasn't
too bad (I don't have a 2.88Mb floppy drive) apart from the fact that I was
installing from files downloaded to my HPFS OS/2 partition and we had to
create a new kernel to let it read HPFS. What we are still struggling to do
is getting XWindows to work. It seems to run (judging from the processes
reported by ps), but the screen goes blank. I am currently working through
what seems to be an enormous lot of info (on the Web) on Linux on the
ThinkPad to find what the mode settings should be (most seems to apply to
slightly different models - usually dual scan), but if someone can tell me
the answer I would be very grateful!
OK, that's quite enough to bore anyone so I'll sign off now.
