We were having the same problem (new smaller adapter wouldn't  
charge the battery while the machine was on) on a TP755C.  To  
correct it, we applied the most recent bios and utility updates  
from the PCC BBS.  We aren't sure which one actually fixed it  
because we didn't check it out between the two updates, but it's  
charging normally now.
