WarpConnect + PortReplicator I + PCMCIA ethernet; hot docking?

I don't remember if I asked this here already; sorry if it's a repeat:

I'm about to order an SVGA 755CX and will be putting it on my home
ethernet. I'd like to use a Port Replicator I with a PCMCIA ethernet card,
and be able to "hot dock" it; connect and disconnect the machine from the
ethernet without having to reboot Warp Connect.

I talked with 3Com tech support and they stated that they'd tried this and
their 3C589B card is not hot-swappable under Warp Connect. 'Tis a shame, as
the promotional pricing is very tempting.

I then spoke with IBM tech support and learned that IBM says that you have
to physically turn the 755 off when docking/undocking the Port Replicator;
making the question of hot-swapping the ethernet card a moot point. While I
understand that you don't really want to connect/disconnect the expansion bus
while the machine is running, it seems odd that you can't do this in a
suspended state.

My questions to the list are:

Do you *really* have to turn off the 755, or are you likely to be safe
just suspending or hibernating (suspend-to-disk) the machine?

If you can just suspend the 755CX, can anyone suggest a 10base2
ethernet card that I can leave in the Port Replicator I and not have
to reboot Warp Connect when docking/undocking?

The IBM tech support guy said that this would work with the Dock II, but
unfortunately it just doesn't fit my needs; I'd have to buy an add'l keyboard
and probably a monitor to use the 755CX effectively.

Thanks; I'll summarize directly-emailed replies to the list in a few days.
