Re 16 bit color, I used 16 bit color under w95 for a while,
but screen updates were so much slower than with 8
bit color that I switched back to 8 bit. I would consider
16 bit color on this system to be a marketing checklist
item rather than something actually useful. 8 bit color
is good enough for what I usually do, though.
Re heat: putting a pillow under your thinkpad seems like a
bad idea. Pillows are usually made of insulating material
that keeps heat from escaping, bringing your system even
closer to meltdown. I use a Silicon Sports palmrest-gizmo
that puts a stiff foam-covered layer between the thinkpad
and your lap, and doesn't seem to cause as much heat
buildup as a pillow (I had also tried a pillow for
a while). I really like the Silicon Sports thing
since the palmrest also makes typing more comfortable.
I've mentioned this before but I really don't like the
heat level current laptops run at. They seem to
like cranking the clock speeds up to just short of
meltdown. Then if process improvements cut the cpu power
consumption at a given clock rate, rather than letting
the chip run cooler, they crank up the clock some more.
I'd much rather have a cool-running 100 mhz machine than
a blistering hot 133 mhz machine.
