Hi,

I got direct cable connection working last night between a PC and
my 701. In my case I didn't have the relevant protocol (Microsoft
IPX/SPX compatible) installed on both machines. Once I did that
it all worked (see Control panel, network). I used the shared
floppy/printer port on the ThinkPad - no port replicator.

You are in luck: I have experimented with the DCC last week and
succeeded
in establishing a connection. The problem is that there is an
IRQ-conflict
between the Audio System and the parallel port. A solution is to change
the IRQ of the Audio System, see

For me this did the trick.

As someone on this list suggested, I tried setting the IRQ of the
floppy/parallel port (stand-alone) to #5. If I hold down f8 while
booting Win95 to go to DOS, the BIOS-configuration utility (?) shows
the port to have IRQ 5 (and EPP/378), just as selected. If I boot
Win95 all the way, the BIOS-configuration utility says the current
port setting is IRQ7/ECP/378, although there is no |> sign (indicating
that the setting was changed) in front of the IRQ5/EPP/378 setting in
the menu where you can alter it. I am wondering whether this is a
display error of the BIOS-configuration utility, or that by some
magic trick the setting of the port has changed. How is this possible?
Does anyone else have this as well?

According to the standard settings on my computer the floppy/parallel
port has address 378 in stand-alone mode, and 278 in multiport mode.
The parallel port (multiport) has address 378. In Win95 LPT1 is set
at address 378, and LPT2 at 278. Conclusion: when the multiport is
attached, its parallel port is LPT1, and the floppy/parallel port is
LPT2.

In theorie, with the multiport attached you should be able to use
the floppy/parallel port for a connection on LPT2 without changing
the IRQ-settings. Have not tried it yet.
