On the 50 pin SCSI connector every data signal has it's own ground return 
(sometimes run in balanced mode).  The major difference as far as I know on the
25 pin is using fewer ground lines.  Adapters are available.

As far as "standard" goes, Apple and Amiga went with the DB25 connector so
it is going
to be the most common regardless of what's official, as they were the biggest 
mass market computers to have SCSI as the standard hard disk.
