I too had this problem, when goint from 340 to 810 MB in my 750C.  The 810
was also IBM, but the wrong "type" regarding jumper settings.  Using a
fine tip soldering iron, I lifted the connector lead for pin 47 or 48 (I
forget which, either one is OK) from the pc board on the drive.  You have
to remove the PCB to get at this, but it wasn't hard.

the other option would be to simply clip the pin on the connector, but
that's pretty irreversible.  If you use the method I described, the drive
can always be restored to the original configuration.
