Here's what I did, thanks to a pointer to the Xfree for WD chips HOWTO:

Built a DOS bootable floppy. Put PS2 (Thinkpad Utilities), LOADLIN, and the
kernel on it. Boot it. Run a BAT that does:

PS2 MODE3X ON
LOADLIN a:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2

I get a *crummy* console (I have to figure out the appropriate termcap,
probably), but X runs fine in 800x600.

Anyone know if any of the other X server (specifically MetroX) can do this?
