X problems on 755CSE

I have had X running fine on the lcd. I finally tried to run it on my
external monitor. I am using a port replicator to get an extra
keyboard and make it easy to hookup at work. When I start X with the
port replicator, I get the error cannot open mouse device. When I
just, plug in the monitor it starts up okay. However, I cannot use
my external keyboard this way. Do I have to use a different device?
BTW how is this list controlled. I think I subscribe from a web page
but I noticed that non of the standard listproc/listserv stuff seems
to work.
