Re: TP 750 hard drives

AHA!!!

I finally got my 810 meg IBM drive to work in the thinkpad. As I
mantioned in previous posts, I suspected it had to do with the drive
select jumper settings. Well, I removed hd and ohmed out the connector
going to the mother board. The two holes on the end are shorted.
Checking the jumper settings for the drive, this corresponds to the MASTER
setting, i.e., first of 2 drives. There should be NO pins jumpered.

How to "unjumper" the 2 end pins? Clip off one of the pins? No...too
risky, what if it didn't work.

The leads of the connector are soldered to the underside of the circuit
board. So I removed the pcb, and using a VERY fine soldering tip (one
made for surface mount work), I lifted one of the leads. Put it back
together and VIOLA! BTW, the hd pcb is fastened to the aluminum casting
with very small torx screws. Fortunately a regular hex wrench (of the
right size) worked ok. The screws were VERY tight.

I suspect the problem with the WD AL2540 drive may be the same. A WD tech
gaveme the jumper settings for that drive and they are the same. Also, he
said that Segueshould have a software fix thay may address this problem,
but the folks at segue didn't know anything about it, though "they are
checking".

I'm going to load up my new, big hard drive. I feel like I just climbed
MtEverest.
