Mute seems to cut off most, but not all, of the voltage reaching the
speakers.  If you really need the machine absolutely quiet, buy a
dummy plug for the headphone jack.  I think someone on this list said
that'll stop the internal speaker from producing any sound.

If you get in a really quiet room and put your ear up to the speaker,
you'll hear a constant hiss.
