I had the same problem with my 701C.  IBM told me that they know about the
problem but since it's discontinued I doubt any fix is forth coming.  I
switched to a Megahertz cellular 28.8 pcmcia modem which works perfect.  The
only time it drops, is when I do the dropping.  Life is to short to surf
through life at less than 28.8...
