"Rocwell used to get a lot of bad rap about their Mac department, rightly
so. I would not advise any novice computer user to buy anything from them
(this actually applies to any retail or mail-order place)."
OK, I should clarify my recommendation -- I have NO dealings with the MAC
side of the operation, only with the PC side, and there my experiences with
the sales people have been pretty good.
One thing that is definitely nice about Rockwell is the way they have many
notebooks on display to try out, so it is a good place to visit to look
at machines even if you don't buy one here. I have found their prices to
be reasonable for systems (unlike some other NY stores they do not play
the game of selling scarce machines well above list price), but their
prices on memory are very high -- but you can always bargain!)
P.S. if you advise novices not to buy from retail places and not to buy
from mail-order places, where on earth *do* you advise them to buy. Seems
to me a lot of products are only available in one of these two kinds of
places!
