I've not used MetroX (I use the Caldera Linux release which comes with
Accelerated-X and of course XFree) so I'm not sure I can help much. On
a laptop screen things will look large though. If the chipset in the
701 is the same as my 755CD, then its a WD90C24A. You can use the
"SuperProbe" command in Linux to find out the chipset.
As for the lilo, are you sure you re-installed lilo after adding the
"linear" option? All you have to do to re-install is enter "lilo" at
the shell prompt. You will see something like:
Added linux *
Added dos
I have always been able to fix the lilo problem you state by adding
"linear".
