New V34 Mwave Fix

For those who have been experiencing problems connecting 28.8 to 28.8 with
the Thinkpad MWave modem(quite a few of us from recent mails), MWave have
made a fix for this. Information as to what it does, and where it can be
obtained are below.

Alex

BTW I don't think a few Postoffice mails is a fair reason to leave an
otherwise very informative mailing list. Thanks to Keith for keeping it going.

V34.DSP version 1.78

This new version of V34.DSP can be used to replace the current version
of V34.DSP on your hard disk. This version fixes a problem that can cause
disconnects when connected to another modem in v.34 mode. If you have version
1.77 of V34.DSP and aren't having problems, this version probably won't help
very much. If you have an earlier version of V34.DSP, this file will provide
some speed benefits (faster connections on marginal lines) as well as help
work around protocol violations in certain other modems.

To tell which version of V34.DSP you are currently using, use a binary
editor/file viewer and search for the text "mhdr". The version information
is contained in the 5th and 6th bytes after the string. (NOTE: This location
may change in future versions, but seems to be correct for all versions
earlier than 1.78). The 5th byte is the major version number and the 6th
byte the minor version number (you'll need to convert these to decimal).
For example:
                    6D 68 64 72 06 00 00 00 01 4E
                    m h d r -- -- -- -- 1 78

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Stop the MWAVE modem program if it is running
  2. Make a backup copy of your current V34.DSP
  3. Replace all instances of V34.DSP in the MWW, MWD, and MWAVEOS2 (if they
exist) subdirectories with the new version (in most cases, the DSP file
will be somewhere deeper in the directory tree). If there are copies of
V34.DSP elsewhere on your disk replace those as well.
  4. Restart the modem program
  5. Enjoy

PLEASE NOTE:
Offically, this is an UNsupported fix. The PC Company and IBM Helpdesk
will not be able to help with any problems you have with this fix applied.
(Thus the suggestion to save your older version). If you do have problems,
replace V34.DSP with the old version and make sure the problem still exists
  before calling.

Unofficially, if you do have problems, e-mail me a note and I'll see what
I can do to help. If I can't answer the question, I'll forward it to the
Mwave developers. You can also send a note to the mailing list at an
internet site devoted to Mwave technology (watson.mbb.sfu.ca).

To subscribe to the mailing list, send e-mail to
"mwave-l-request@watson.mbb.sfu.ca" with the subject of "subscribe" (minus
the quotes). You'll get a note back with more info.
