Unresolvable mail address

I ran into a problem this past week that took me a long time to resolve.
I have a Thinkpad 760C with a Dock II. The Dock II has a 3COM Etherlink
III 3C589C-TP network card in it. I also have a loaner external SCSI
CDROM plugged into the Dock. I run OS/2 Warp Connect with FP17.
This set up has worked without any serious problems for several weeks.
As I left the office one evening, the owner of the CDROM needed it back,
so I just unplugged it from the Dock. The next morning, when I docked
again I could not use my network applications. I had no reason to
associate this with the removal of the SCSI CDROM, so I spent the next
several days trying to figure out if my 3COM card, cable or Thinkpad had
gone bad. I tried someone elses card and cable, it didn't work either.
I verified the network connecting was good. I looked at the OS/2 network
configuration, and even restored some backed up config files to be sure.
I could not find anything that indicated any problem with OS/2, the card
or the Thinkpad. Everything indicated the card was working. Believe
me, I looked at all the configuration screens from the Dock II setup to
the Thinkpad setup to the Network configuration.
I figured I might as well reinstall the network software from Warp
Connect to be sure something hadn't been lost, before I sent the
Thinkpad in to be serviced. To my complete surprise, when I reconnected
the SCSI CDROM, the network applications worked again. As I get time, I
will try to figure out why disconnecting the SCSI caused the problem.
However, I have a co-worker that has a 755CD who says his Thinkpad
will not network if his TP CDROM is installed. He has to remove his
CDROM to get the card to work. This makes me think the Thinkpad may
have some quirk about auto detecting devices that in turn plays havoc
with the network PC card.
If anyone has more insight to this, please post to the list. I'll
follow up if I discover more with my setup. I've got to figure out how
to disconnect the CDROM and keep my network access!

Is the PCI available off the docking connection? Or just internally?
Anyone know what the cache is on these things?

These are my two cents after 3 weeks with l'il butterfly. Love it.
After ten years and 17 different systems this is the one I wanna be
buried with. Glad to hear your opinions.
This has been posted in comp.sys.laptops before and a few answers trickled
in, the ones helpfull I appended after each question.
P.S. Don't you think it was time for a TP 701-only List or Newsgroup ?
P.P.S.: I'm running good 'ole DOS622 & WIN311. OS/2, LINUX or WIN95/NT look
fancy but are they worth the hassle ? (Don't answer this one, I'm decided.
Besides, I like to use my computer now and then, not fiddle constantly.)

Comments:
#1: Don't push in the battery to hard, or it'll break the spring mechanism.
#2: Tape the battery release switch to ensure the thing won't move and data
is lost. The Thinkpads internal capacitators can't handle even a split
second of powerloss. Even if your mechanism is ok, most of us won't change
the battery ever so why not secure it.
#3: The butterfly dropped from 1.5 metres, sent my Hardisk flying accross the
room, plugged it back in and works fine.
#4: I use the dragon dictate speech recognition system and it works fine
with my thinkpad microphone, speaking in a normal voice at a comfortable
viewing distance or even further, with medium background noise.
#5: I recorded a full CD (Beasty Boys, Pauls Boutique) onto my harddrive,
with some quality clipping which is ok because the speakers aren't that
good. The 54 Minutes take up 70 MB of space and it plays loud and clear
in the background running WIN 3.11.
#6: Scanning a Map of your City is a good idea. Uses 2-3 MB and helps a lot.
#7: I was impressed how I could call system functions like volume or even
BIOS without crashing DOOM or other protected shells. I had other laptops,
none could handle this.
#8: I prefer a DST (cheap) color display over a fancy TFT display. The
image quality at typical working distance is nearly as good, except for
high speed moving actions (games), but at an angle you can't see a thing.
I find it comfortable that others can't peek when I'm using it in public.
#9: For those using the 520MB HDD or bigger versions, note that the critical
value for big cluster sizes and thus more waste are partitions >511 MB.
Better use 2 Partitions here.
#10: With the ThinkPad now, I don't regard it as a computer, rather as a
TypeWriter, TapeRecorder, Diary, CityMap, PhysiciansDeskReference,
Dictionary, ChessBoard, Translator, RoutePlanner, GameBoy, Bookshelf,
Terminal, TelephoneDirectory, FAX, I-Ging ...
I try to automate the paths to each function, so I don't think of it as
something to fiddle with, but something that works.
Please suggest other 'REAL' applications, not just system or utility aspects.

Questions:
#1: The Suspend/Resume functions are a bit tricky sometimes. Sometimes the
machine wakes as soon as I open the lid, but sometimes keystrokes or mouse
moves wont do and I have to tickle it with a system procedure, like going to
the Bios, but sometimes I even have to use the power switch. It awakens ok
but I'm always a bit nervous about my data. What are the parameters for this?
#2: The Mouse sometimes slithers untouched after a bit of pointing, nothing
bad, a little counter pressure will stop this. But is this normal ?

don't change anything on the display, or very very little. Only the hissing
of the display is altered. Comments ?

#17: What happens when I delete the hibernation file and fill the disk
before it gets a chance to restore it ?

Hi Gary (and fellow ThinkPad lovers),
I've had an IBM 760CD-120 on order for months and was told IBM stopped
all Thinkpad production in February due to a lack of specific "parts".
Shipments were suppose to startup again March 15th.
Now you say that the brand-new 760LD is being discontinued almost as
soon as it becomes available and that the 760ED is being added as a
new model (I assume it's not replacing the 760CD?). Lots of strange
and wonderful things happening here.
Since you seem to have some inside information Gary, any idea what is
really going on with the 760 models? Why all of these apparent
"mid-stream" changes?
Since I've waited so long for the 760CD-120 to become available, it
makes sense to wait a little longer for the 760ED. Any idea when
the 760ED will REALLY be available? Has it "officially" been
announced yet...with part number? List price??
BTW, I was wondering why IBM didn't include a PCI-bus, 16MB memory
standard, and 2Mb video ram in the original 760CD...seemed strange
with everyone else headed in that direction. Sounds like some IBM
honcho thought the same thing and decided to "fix" it. I'd sure
love to know what REALLY happen...I suppose we'll never know for
sure.

stuff, it all seems to work, except there's no sound. The previous
US Robotics Worldport produced dial tones and training noises via the
