Jeffrey Friedl already answered this but wanted to add
that Darin Ernst provides an WDC90C24 XF86Config web page
for notebooks at
http://www.castle.net/~darin
It includes clocks for the SVGA 755CX.

Also, there's Yoshiro Miharas "How to 800x600 dots on LCD
with X window system" web page at
http://www.yy.cs.keio.ac.jp/contrib/sanpei/how2800x600.html
which provides boot block and console patches that set the
video controller to VESA 800x600 mode on boot so running
"ps2 mode3x on" in DOS and warm booting Linux is not
necessary (note: I don't use Linux so haven't tested it,
and you need to read the code first to make sure it
doesn't do something unexpected).
