I have a Thinkpad 755CX and my latches look like your Exhibit A.  While I
agree with you that I have to pull the tabs slightly apart to lift the
keyboard, I think it is supposed to be design this way.  The reason being
that you would release your keyboard everytime you open the computer.  I've
seen many of the 755 (CE, CD, CX) and they are all like this.

Sorry to disagree with you but IBM wins on this one.
