I know its not the same number but there is a serial number that shows   
up in the config screen if you hold F1 while poweron.  IBM may be able   
to initiate service based on that number. 
 
Did you buy this machine new?  Did someone before you rub off the   
number.  There are a few machines going around that are true IBM only   
as far as the platic case.  Beware.
