Windows 95

Item Subject: Message text
Windows 95 Preview Program is up and running on my ThinkPad 750!
(monochrome LCD, 33MHz, 20MB RAM). I'm quite pleased so far. I think I
like it better than OS/2 Warp. Performance is *much* better,
particularly with 16-bit Windows applications. DOS app performance also
seems better while running one session, though I suspect OS/2 Warp does
a better job of handling multiple sessions. It's been as stable as OS/2
so far, but I have yet to really start pushing it. The DriveSpace
compression program is much much better than Stacker for OS/2 and DOS.

Plug and Play really works! I set up Win95 while I had the TP away from
my Port Replicator I. It auto-detected and set up the Intel Faxmodem.
When I attached the Port Replicator and booted up, Win95 auto-detected
the different monitor, the two extra PCMCIA slots, and even the printer,
an HP LaserJet 4L, and set up a new configuration that it's smart enough
to switch to when docked. This is really slick.

I've done a pretty good job so far of setting driver support up. If I
load VESA.EXE in config.sys, I can use the Win95 Western Digital drivers
no problem. I can do dynamic resolution changes. I loaded the Win 3.1
sound drivers for WAV and MIDI support, and they work fine.

The PCMCIA stuff in Win 95 works just fine. It doesn't turn on the
little green PCMCIA light on my TP's row of indicator lights, but I
never liked that light anyway.

Power management seems to be the only problem. I loaded "Advanced Power
Management with Intel SL support" upon install. The battery guage shows
up on the taskbar, but the Power Management control panel won't give me
the option of adding "suspend" to the Start menu (maybe this just hasn't
been implemented yet). Sometimes when I use the keyboard suspend
option, it works. Other times, it doesn't. When I resume, the speaker
light flashes when sounds are played (it doesn't before suspending). I
can't suspend from the ThinkPad Features Fuel program. I can't
hibernate at all--trying to do so just lands me in suspend mode.

I suspect that if I start playing around with mixing the real-mode card
and socket services drivers and maybe change the PCMCIA configuration
around some I can get it all working just the way I want it
(transparently, like the rest of the OS seems to work.)

If anyone has this done already, I sure would appreciate it if you would
reply via e-mail. I fooled around for a long time getting this stuff to
work just right under OS/2, and I don't quite feel like going through
that again.

Thank You.
