cleaning up the repository

It's time to start thinking about cleaning up the CVS repository.  At
this point, there's so much old junk that it's hard to keep track of
what's relevant and what's not.

I'm planning on constructing a new CVS repository with all of the
current, living code.  Sean and Will,  can you give me the pathnames to
the directories that are alive?  A brief description of each directory
would be helpful.  Also, pathnames to any directories that your code
depends on.

Sanitizing the code will also allow us to simplfy dependencies, more
easily document what we have, ease understanding, etc. etc. etc.

Will, if you can send me this by the end of the week, that would be
terrific.
