A SUBSTITUTE NAME FOR THE EXTINCT GENUS
PROBEROTHA RIEK (NEUROPTERAI*

In 1955 Dr. Edgar Riek described a fossil neuropteron for which he named a new genus, Proberotha, in a new, extinct family Proberothidae. During the past year, while preparing a general account of the geological record of the Neuroptera, I noted that his generic name was preoccupied by Proberotha Kruger (1923). I accordingly wrote Dr. Riek about this homonymy and in reply he informed me that although he had been aware of the homonymy for more than twenty years, he has not published a substitute name. Since the homonymy still exists and since Dr. Riek is no longer active in entomology, I am now proposing the following replace- ment name:
Mesoberotha, nomen novum, pro Proberotha Riek, 1955, p. 674, non Proberotha Kruger, 1923, p. 81. The type species, Proberotha superba Riek, 1955, original designation, becomes Mesoberotha superba (Riek), new combination, and the family name, Proberothidae, becomes Mesoberothidae. The genus is known only from the Triassic of Germany. I have selected Mesoberotha as the substitute name because it was the one that Dr. Riek had in mind to use in 1970.
