THE SPECIES OF ANABRUS AXD
THEIR DISTRIBUTION.
FROM an examination of over two hundred
specimens of Anabrus from different parts of the west, there appear to be four species in the United States. The first described was (I) A. simplex Hald. [Stansb. Expl. Utiiti,372, pi. 10, fig. 4) which was first recorded from Salt Lake and is found over the interior pi%- tea11 west of the Rocky Mts., and north of southern Utah to the Sierras and, beyond them, in northern California, Oregon and Washington. The figures of the species
given by Glover (Illustr., pi. 9, fig. i, pi. 14, fig. 5), Thomas (Hayden's Fifth Ann. Rep., pi. I, fig. I), and Packard (Second Rep. Ent. Comm., 164) belong here, and this is prob- ably the case also with the figures of Hcr- man (Verh. zool.-hot. ges. Wien, 24: pl. 6, figs. 76-86), which I formerly doubted (Rep. Chief. eng., 1876, 500).
The second species described was (2) A.
fztrf~~rascvns Uhf. (Proc. Ent. soc. Phil., 2 : 550)) a name which must be restricted to the species found cast of the Rocky Mts., from Montana, Dakota and Manitoba over the
prairies and plains as far as Kansas. The type specimens (in my collection) come
from Red River, Manitoba, and the speci- mens mentioned by Uhler from Texas and
Washington probably belonged to other
species. A. sa'nzilis Scudd. (Hayd. Rep. Nebr., 249) is a sjnonym of this.. The fig- ures given by Glover
(Illustr., pi. 17, figs.
so, 11) belong here, but that by Packard (Second Rep. Ent. Comm., 163) belongs to the next species.
This is (3) A. coloradns Thorn. (Haydcn's Fifth Ann. Rep., 4401, redescribed in part by me (Rep. Chief Eng.. 1876, joo), a mountain and alpine form, found mostly in Colorado but also extending south to Xew Mexico and Texas, unless the specimens from the latter state (of which I have hut few, in poor con- dition) belong to A. 'fiurpwrrrsce~s. As stated above, this species: is figured by Packard under the name A. puq%zwascefis.
A (4) fourth undescribed species in my
collection, from Texas, is readily distin- guiihed from the others by its much slenderer and relatively longer legs. The other species referred at difiwent times to Anahrus do not belong here (See Can, Ent., 26: 180-81.

An introduction, for the yonng student, to the names and something of the relationship and lives of our commoner butterflies. The author has selected for treatment the b~itter- flies, less than one hundred in number, which would be almost surely met with by an in- dustrious collector in n- course of a year's or two year's work in our Northern States east of the Great Plains, and in Canada. While all the apparatus necessary to identify these butterflies, in their earlier as well a5 perfect stage: is supplied, it is FEU- from the author's purpose to treat them as if they wereso many mcre postage-stainps tu be classified and ar- ranged in a cabinet. lie has accordingly added to the descrip~iuns of the different spe- cies, their most obvious staves, some of the curious facts concerning their periodicity and their habits of life.
Scudder's The Life of a Butterfly.
A Chapter in Natural History for
the General Reader.
By SAMUEL H. SCUDDEK. 186 pp. 16n1o.
$1.00.
In this book the author has tried to present in untechnical language the story of the life of one of our most conspicuous American
butterflies. At the same time, by introduc- ing into the account of its anatomy, devel- opment, distribution, enemies, and seasonal changcs some comparisons with the more or less dissimilar striictnreand life of other hut- terflies, and particularly of our native forins. he has endeavored to give, in some fashion and in brief space, a general account of the lives of the whole tribe. Tiy using a single butterfly as a special text, one may disxvirse ;it pleasure of many; and in the limited field which our native butterflies cover, this meth- od has a certain advantage from its simplicity and directness.
