Antemiae nearly as long as body, orange, becoming purplish on last two segments : basal segment naiied; second four times the first in length, a few hairs distally;; third equalling the second plus one-half the first, verticillate; terminal segment twice the basal, whorled as usual. Thorax yellow. Abdomen oval
in doi-sal aspect, dark piii-ple, almost black, coves-ing the sides and meeting the pale ventral surface with a well-defined bnt zig- mgimargin ; on posterior half of dorsiim, a yellowish brown pattern, ver? variable
(sometimes almost absent) but consisting fi~ndamentally of a median elongated mark widening behind and one quarter the length of the abdomen, lying bctween lour rouncled tnangula'r spots, the anterior pair of which are more or less three-lobed. These five spots inay be bepamte, but the three anterior .~ts~ially unite into a figitre having a large po?.tenor median lobe, three lateral lobes and a l;irge anterior median sinus; the two posterior spots may unite to form a long, -regular crescent before the apex of the abdomen; abdomen with a few t-hort, while iribtles on apical half: inanj two or three times longer upon the yellow anal tubercle. Described from over twenty- specimens
collected by me in October iincl e;n-I\- No- vcinber, 1895, :it Arlington, Mass. This active, uncommon species occurred in pine woods under damp, decaying twip and
needles.
