THE FIRST NUMERO OF THOMAS SAJ7'S AMERICAN ENTO- MOLOGY AND TWO LETTERS ON THE EIESSIA4N
FLY HITHERTO XOT MENTIONED AMONG
HIS PU13LISHED PAPERS.
I hot~ght, in 1850, out of the library
of the late W. Vo11 Winthem, in Ham-
b~lrg, the first numero of Say's A~nerican entomology, 1817 ; the first v01~1me
of his American entomology, 1824 ;
and the glossary, 1825. All three
are in the origi~ml binding and the
two latter with the inscription on
the title : LbTo Mr. WTm. W. voh Win-
them from his friend the author." All
belong now to the 1ilxa1-y of the hf~~semn of comparative zoology.
The first numeso of vo1~11ne I of the
An~er. ento~nology, 181 7, is extremely
rare ; indeed I have never seen another
copy than mine in E~lrope or in Amer-
ica, and was also ass~xecl by the best
ai1t1101-ity, Mr. S. H. Sci~dder, that he had never seen a copy. Dr. J. I>. Le-
Conte, in his edition of Say's &orks,
1859, v. 2, p. I, note, s21ys: '''U~ese
references are to the s~~ppressed first edi- tion of the -41nerican enton~ology , ~vhich I have never seen." Later, in 1872,
wlien I slmwed illy copy to the late Doc- tor, he answered tht he possessed a
similar copy. Perhaps my memory is
WI-ong ; at least ~ I I the printed catalogue of his library it is not ~nentionecl.
I suppose some details about this
rare l>ook may not be OLI~ of place.
Say, ill the preface of vol. I, 1824, p. vii, says: LbSix plates of the present
volume, togethei- with their accon313a-
nying test, were printed of in the year
1817. b ~ ~ t as they were never properly p~~ldished, it has been t110~1ght ad~isa- ble to inc111cle them in the present
w01L."
The little volume is printed on the
same paper and same size as 1-01. I,
1824 ; the cover has the same nice vig-
nette (two cupids catching insects),
b ~ ~ t ~narkect 1-01. I, no. I, and Kneass, JToung and Co. etc., which is also re-
peated on the title plate.
Tlw title is
American 1 Entomology 1 or 1 Descrip-
tions 1 of the 1 Insects of North Ameri- c:t 1 ill~~strated by 1 CO~OIII-ed Figures 1 from 1 Drxwings executed from I~I~LII-e 1 by Tl~o~nas Say 1 Member of the
Academy of Natural Scie~ices of Phila-
delphia etc. 1 (the yerses from Stilli~g- fleet as in 1824) Philadelphia 1 publish- ed by A4itchell and Ames 1 W. Brown,
Printer, Pr~~nc street. 1 1817.-
Then follows. p.
iii to x, a preface
entirely different from that in 1824.
The six plates have no numero nor
the name of the engraver, exactly as in
voli~me I, 1824, where the same six
plates are alone not n~~inbered.
I. Pa$i?z'~ Philmor, with three
pages of text, ~narked Plate 1 (the same numero in 1824).
2.
Gmtm$es Titym, with 4 pages
of text, marked Pl. I1 (SCUJ-ahaeus
Titym, pl. 4, in 1824).

3. NemognaLha immixczdata, ~7itI1
2 pages of text) imarked Pl. I11 (pl. 7
in 1824).
4. NU~OXUS mo?zodon, the lower
fig.) and AT. 6icoZw, wit11 4 pages of
text, maslced PI. IV (A~zLhicus 6icoZo~
and A. mozodon, pl. 10) in 1824).
5.
Be~yh~s s~i~zosz~s, ~16th 3 pages
of text, marked Pl. V (pl. 14, in 1824). 6.
Cicim?eZa foymosa, mzd C. de-
ce~mzoLaLa, with 4 pages of text) marked Pl. VI) and followec1 bj7 an index of the 8 species figured (pl. 18 in 1824).
The text in I 824 is tl~ro~gl~o~~t difTer- ent from the text in 181 7, n~ostlj~ short- ened, but scarcely difTerent for the
descriptive part of the species. The
coloi-ation of the plates is more careful than in 1824 and better than in Le-
Conte's edition.
The Memoirs of the Pl~iladelpl~ia
society for pro inoting agriculture, vol . 4, Pl~iladelpl~ia) 1818, go, contain two letters of Tl~oinas Say, wl~icl~ are not ime~~tioned in Douhledafs List of T11om- as Say's works) nos in Leconte's editionl nor quoted by l'h. W. Hal-ris. Dr.
Asa Fitch states that he has never seen
'this rare book. The vol~~ines were pre- sented to the Library of Harvai-(1 college in 1849, after Harris 11ad don; his work. He knew it, b~it as it contaii~s nothiilg of importance it is not q~ioted by Harris, though in one vol~~me a letter to him is found on the cover.
I.

SOLJND-PRODUCING ORGANS IN ANO-
MALA, ANTHOSOMLJS, ASD OTHER
COLEOPTERA.-T~I~~~ is a strid~llating
organ in AnomaZa) situated on the imeta- thorax and eljtra, in the same position as described by me in Po&$hy?Za (PSYCHE,
v. 2, p. 278). Its location is the same as that of' the eljti-a1 organ described by Dr. LeConte (Class. col. N. A.) in
TTPOX and Li~yms) but Dr. LeConte
failed to notice that the inetathorax in those genera has on its ascending portion (beneath a ridge in fi-ux) a cor~espon-
ding pearly space, just as it has in
Po@$,&yZZa; this is in addition to the
organ on the first ventsal1 correspoi~dii~g to the t11i1-d clorsal, seg!nent, in 7>0x, described by Dr. LeConte. My finding
these orgms in meZoZo&hini and yzdeZ-
ini is merely accidental : why does not
solme coleopterist st~idj- tl~ein ~nicrosco- pically in all OLI~ genera of SC~J-daei- dm? The sa111e organs are present in
Limoni7~s and other eZa.f.et?idael and
there is, besides, a s~~rface oil the ascen- ding portion of the first ventral segment, 21s in Tkox, which, as in Tkox. cori-es- ponds to a second surfxe on the elytr:~. I find stric1idating organs als,) in .+?EL ihonomus) of the C Z ~ Y C Z ~ ~ ~ O I Z ~ ~ ~ ~ , sit~lated as in Azomcda.
