September-October &Sj.] PSYCHE. 99
AT THE meeting- of the French entomo-
logical society, held July it, Mr. E, Leftvre showed a large solitary ant allied to Ponera, found about Hong Kong, remarkable for the extraordinary developtnunt of .its mouth parts, and for its power of leaping; being able, when disturbed, to make bounds of
twenty to twenty-five centimetres. The
statement wak confirmed by the experience of earlier observers.
As the legs are in no
way developed for springing, Mr. Lefevre was inclined to think that it was accom- plished in some way by its buccal organs.- Sciame, 14 Sept. 1883, v. 2, p. 386.

field, 15 fair specimens, 17 Aug. Vanessa milbeyti has been abundant in some localities about Boston this season. Another rare
capture was two partly grown larvae of
Cithermia regalis, at Leverett, 15 Aug.
DR. HERMANN MULLER, of Lippstadt,
Germany, who has made many interesting
and valuable contributions to scientific litera- ture upon the mutual relations of insects and plants, especially upon the fertilization of- plants by insects, died at Prad, in Tyrol, 25 August. His name heads over fifty titles of the bibliographical record of volume three of PSYCHE, and the name of his brother, Dr. Fritz Muller, of Blumenau, Brazil, about twenty more. Dr. Hermann Miiller has con- tributed largely to Just's Botanischer~'ahres- berich;', to Nature and to Kosmos; and,
among other separate works, may be noted his excellent treatise on the fertilization of flowers by insects and their mutual adapta- tion for that function. The above statements convey only an imperfect idea of the amount, and almost no idea of the value of the papers written by Dr. Muller, whose death will be mourned by his numerous correspondents
and by naturalists in general as the loss of a true philosopher in his special field of re- search. G: D.
