INTRODUCTION TO THE FOURTH
VOLUME.
PSYCHE enters upon its fourth volume
under auspices in many regards mote favor- able thin those which have attended the
inauguration of edier volumes. The mate- rial support upan which the CAMBRIDGE
ENTOMOLOGICAL CLUE, a& publisher, can
count, while not sufFxient to defray the eqjen- ses of publication, bid6 fair to Leave the friends of PSYCHE with smaller deficits to meet than heretofore. The explanation should be made that the CLUB, while devoting all its avaihble means to the publication of PSYCHE, ia obtiged to rely upon private benefactors to make up its arrears of funds from time to time; else it would be obliged to sugpend the execution of its work. The Managing Editor, having faith in the good-will of his fellow-entomoZogist6, and of patrons of science, assumes the respon- sibility of expenditures which exceed the resourws of the Club. Contributions to the Permanent Publication Fund of PSYCHE are earnestly 6olicited.
In editorial support the management feel6 especially rich, referring with pride to the published list of associate editors. Without this support the task of issuing a fourth vol- ume of PSYCHE would not have k n accepted by the undersigned, who appreciate the difi- culties of performing their part well under the pressure of their other omuptions, and 'with the limited resource8 at the command of the CLUB.
PSYCFXX will be devoted, as heretofore. to the presentation of entomology in its higher and more philo6ophical aspect$. It will
leave to other magazines the bare descriptions of new ~peciefi, and contests over priority and 6ynonymy, as well as competition for the exliest announcement of news. As the off% cia1 publication of the CAMBRIDGE ENTOMO- LOGICAL CLUB, it will contain the ~ninutefi of the meetings of the CLUB, and serve ns a medium of communiwtion between the
members. A1 though the CAMBRIDGE ENTO-
MOLOGXCAL CLUB is a society bearing a
local name, its members are chosen without local limitation, and PSYCHE will endeavor to represent the interest6 of scientific entomol- ogy wherever pursued, and to advance, irn- partially, the welfare of all societies having the same objects in view. Welcoming to its cohmm original articles of a chnmcter suikd to its aims, it will seek to preuent to it6 waders ~uch notices of, or extracts from, articles of iike character, appearing in other publications, as will make it most valuable to the philosophic entomdogkt. Brief items, nnd condenwd abstracts of the procedings of 6cientXc societies in all parts of the world, so far as they are related to generul entomology, wodd be thankfally received by the editma. Oficial notices of the times and places of meetings of entomologi~l societieg will be inserkd in our cdumn dtvokd to thnt purpose, free of charge.
The form of the BIBLIOGRARHICAL RECORD-
being in accordance with the highest thonght i~pon the subject in the world,* will remain unchanged ; but the matter will be made more valuable than heretofore, by the exercise of a selection fro111 atnofig the works to be noticed by preikrenm. While it has long
been evident that the epace which could be devoted to the Record in PSYCHE was insus- cient for the publication of complete lists of *SM Fsrcn~, March I‰â v. 3, p. +i.

even those writings which it would be lnost appropriate to notice, the Editor of the Rec- ord has not withheld from p~iblication suchar- ticles as came to hand7 even though of minor importance. He will in the future preserve these in manuscript, indexed as well as may be, for refkrence, and publish the record only of the more important articles. Sho~ild
means, from sources yet unknown, be af-
forded for the presentation of a complete work, none would appreciate the value of it more than he. In order to perrect this record7 the editor I-espectf~~lly requests that copies of pub- lications containing entomological articles may be sent by the a~ithors 01- the publishers> or by friends of PSYCHE> to the Library of* the CAMBRIDGE ENTOMOLOGICAL CLUB>
where they will be at the disposition of the s~ibscribers to PSYCHE, thro~~gho~it North America. ~~ncier the rules of the CLUB.

"At the Novembe~ meeting of the Club, in 1881, I showed a specimen of ant architec- ture which was f~~rtliei- described in PSYCHE for Feb.1882. At the time this was written 1 had forgotten that MI-. Walsh has recorded
