M. PAUL NOEL describes two modes of collect- ing coleoptera in the hay numero of the Faille des jeuses nuturulistes. TO capture some of the carahidae he strews earthworms, cut in email pieces, about loose rocka or boards near moist roads. After the beetles have eaten their fill, during the night, they secrete themselves under the boards or rocks, where they may be easily collected the next morning. To capture Geoh-a- pes and staphylmidae M. Noel puts the excre- ment in which they live in a tub of water, and, after thorough stirring, the beetles float to the top, while the refuse mostly sinks. The beetles can be easily, gathered from the surface with a sieve, a few grains of ether having been added to the water, if they are so numerous as to be liable to escape. This mode of collecting will tie applicable to insects not mentioned by M. Noel, e. g., to beetles in bark and fungus, by wing forced eubmersion.
