A unifying characteristic of MEMS applications is that they tend to exploit places where micro-scale interactions are coupled to macro-scale effects. For instance, tiny motion of a diffraction grating changes the color of a surface. Similarly, a tiny control action can be amplified by turbulence to have dramatic macro-scale effects.
