slackware 96 on 755C... fdisk problem?

Everyone,
I am currently attempting to install slackware 96 on my thinkpad 755C, but have 
encountered an anomaly that results in the following error message
when SETUP tries to install the packages via NFS:

no space left on device


Now, I totally wiped the hard drive before starting (with DOS's fdisk), and 
this message occurs immediately when SETUP tries to install the a disks.

Linux's fdisk reported the drive geometry as being:
cylinders=1047
heads=16
sectors=63

On the contrary, FIPS and HDTEST report the geometry as being:
cylinders=521
heads=32
sectors=63


I have tried using the expert mode in Linux's fdisk to set the 
cylinders,heads,and sectors to 521,32,63 then
writing the table to disk and rebooting, but linux's fdisk
*STILL* reports is being 1047,16,63.

At the boot prompt, I type in:
boot: ramdisk hd=521,32,63 mount floppy=thinkpad

Nothing seems to make a difference. I have tried using the "default
geometry" of 1047,16,63 but that doesnt work either.

In any case, when SETUP begins to install the packages, I get
lots of disk errors about symbolic links and no disk space.

I did tell setup to format the hard drive, prep the swap file,etc.

Somebody help me!

Some other (perhaps) useful info on the problem:
1. the hard disk is 514 megabytes (according to dos fdisk)
2. using net.i as the boot floppy
3. using pcmcia.gz as the root floppy
4. the machine has 12 megs ram, dx4 75 Mhz thinkpad 755C
