I buy LOTS of low end notebooks for friends, and recently have bought
some very nice color machines brand new for under $1000, which is easy
to do in New York stores. 

For example, a Sharp PC 3010 brand new 486 66 MHz, 4MB 340 hard drive
with 10.4" passive color display is $999 at TriState.

A Compaq LTE Elite 486 75MHz with 8MB  RAM 420 MB hard drive, is $1188

It is these kind of prices that make me think that a mono machine is not
worth much these days. I usually consider that a used machine vs a new
one should reduce the price at least by 40%. So I am starting with
a figure of $600 for comparable used color machine. The mono is worth
substantially less, and that is where my figure of a few hundred dollars
comes from. Of course it is all up to what people are willing to pay, but
I would not advise people to get a used mono machine to save a few hundred
dolalrs over a brand new color machine.
