there's a series of steps to take that may fix this for some of you--


after upgrading the bios, go into easy setup & reinitialize.  still in easy 
setup, go into config, choose serial, and set both com ports to 'disabled.'

***you should not make any changes to mwave software settings, com ports, or 
the infrared port after this point, until you have upgraded the mwave dos, the 
mwave windows, the dsp, and thinkpad utilities.  if you did make changes before 
upgrading to the 95 versions of the software, start over by reinitializing in 
easy setup.

*** do not reboot during the following steps if win95 asks you to ***
once you've run all the thinkpad win95 upgrades, go into thinkpad setup and:
         1) disable infrared
         2) under serial, enable serial a on com1 & disable serial b
         3) under dsp, telephony function, enable the modem on com2
in the device manager, remove all com ports from all configurations.
remove the mwave modem from all configurations.
shut down, power off & restart.

95 will pick up the ports again when you reboot.  one will ask you for a 
driver-- select 'windows default driver.'  device manager should list one as 
'mwave communications port,' one as a printer port, and one or two as 
'communications port'.  if it only lists one as 'communications port,' go into 
'add new hardware' & add a standard serial port.  then you should have two in 
device manager:  one that has 'com 1' or 'com 2' after it & one with nothing 
after it.  select the one with nothing after it, go into 'properties' & change 
the driver to ibm 'thinkpad infrared port.'  reboot.

makes a world of difference.
