Linux and internal modem/SCSI DAT drive

The internal modem can't be used with Linux.  It depends on some
proprietary IBM software.  There are some folks working to build a
loader for it, but it hasn't happened.

   I also have a Bus Toaster PCMCIA card.  Linux is able to access
   my CD-ROM drive but I'm having trouble getting it to recognize
   my 4mm DAT drive.  Anyone got any tips for me? I suspect it's
   a kernel configuration problem.

Did you configure the kernel with SCSI tape support?  If you didn't
configure the kernel yourself, it's probable that the tape support
isn't configured.  I'm not sure how to tell, but it's fairly easy to
rebuild the kernel, and well worth doing just for the experience.
