Re: Hard Disk sizes (was: New Member needs mass storage)
"Since when is the definition K = 2^10 (1024) non-standard IN RELATION
TO COMPUTERS? Do you measure your computer's memory in powers of 10?
All the harddisk manufacturers are doing is confusing the general
public by using one value for K for harddisks and another for
anything else to do with a computer. My .02 worth."
fine, but hard disk capacties are not measured that way, and when people
talk about terrabytes of disk space, they are typically talking 10**12,
and not 2**40.
Sure it makes sense to mmeasure main memory in the power of 2 style, since
memorie are typically powers of 2 or small multiles times powers of 2, but
this is simly not true for disks.
The industry standard for measuring disk capacity is the way that IBM
uses. If you think it is a scam beause you had different expectations,
then it is
simply a matter of not knowing how disk capacities are (and have been )
measured. It would be truly confusing if some manufacturer ignorant of
the industry standard started using an incompatible standard.
