701cs brightness control

I just got a 701cs, love the closeout pricing. The brightness control
doesn't seem to do anything. Not having had a color notebook before, and
knowing that this is a passive matrix system, is it supposed to? I thought
I would ask the experts here before calling IBM. I am also getting random
but frequent access errors at location ffffffff when I start  WordPerfect
6.0a. I have 8mb ram [another 8 on the way] and am running under OS/2. I
have never gotten this type of error on my desktop. Any help appreciated.
