But just precisely what does the Win95 IrDA driver do?

I picked it up and installed it on my ThinkPad 755CX, which has
built-in IrDA compliant IR on COM1. One of the first things the
installation asks is what IR to use, and it chooses to use COM1 for
the IR. After that, it sets up a COM4 for me to use for IR.

What was the point? I already had a COM1 which did IR!

I was hoping for a driver that would actually use the IR by itself,
and not force me to configure COM1 to be the IR, so that I could use
both the serial port and the IR. I'm tired of having to switch between
serial and IR and reboot.
