        It's a "feature" to save your battery.

        On my 750C, it can be circumvented at the DOS line by typing "PS2
BR N".  PS2 is the command for invoking ThinkPad features (as you know), BR
stands for "Brightness", and "N" is "Normal" (rather than "battery save".
On the 750's it was undocumented--I don't know whether it is known (or even
*works*) on the newer ones.
