they are generally stable under normal conditions, you're only in danger if you:

1. operate your thinkpad within 40 feet of a microwave oven, the microwaves
resonate in the lithium and create a sympathetic vibration, particularly
while displaying some excel charts.

2. storing the battery in custard.  contrary to the advice of a certain
popular professional wrestler, lithium batteries should NOT be stored in
custard.  the custard can excite the lithium to the point of explosion (as
it does for most of us).

3. follow explosive prevention and handling instructions from anyone
connected with spine.com, known hucksters and fornicators.

4. chewing on the battery casing.  this is actually quite safe, apart from
the dental issues it conjures.
