TP755Cs/LINUX Slackware 2.2.0 Installation
Hi everyone,
I have been attempting this LINUX installation on my TP755Cs/8MegRam/DX4-75/
340MegHD/1.44Mfloppy. This is a standalone configuration for now and
I have a few questions for the LINUX gurus among this list.
I have already checked the FAQs/HOWTOs, Jesse's web page, & the web page
at peipa.essex.ac.uk. I have looked around for the answers and don't mind
being told if there are other Web pages/ pointers I should check out for answers
to my questions.
1. I have been told that there is 755Cs info at www.cica.fr web page. But,
I cannot access the web page at http://www.cica.fr:9090/~basturk/... or
www.cica,fr./~basturk/... etc. or variations of the above. I can only get
into the top level www.cica.fr and can't find my way to the right place for
the 755Cs/Linux specific information. Any ideas or does anyone know the right
address? Maybe it's no longer there.
2. I am installing Linux on 340 Meg drive with 8Meg swap partition, with
the remainder for Linux (no DOS partitions). I have another 170Meg drive
which I run DOS/Windows. I do not have APM under LINUX yet on the 340Megger,
so when I switch between these two drives, my battery (the only one I have)
is going haywire. I think if I had a DOS partition, that the built-in battery
operations would probably work, because they could keep the important files
updated on the DOS partition. At this point, since I am so far into the LINUX
installation and cannot easily go back and repartition,
I think that I will only use the battery under DOS/Windows (where APM is alive
and well) and pull it out when I shift to LINUX. So, my questions are two here:
- When I am plugged into AC (with the NIMH battery out), is the internal battery
which maintains the clock and other features being replenished or am I in danger
of running it down if I run long hours under LINUX this way?
- Once I get APM up and running under LINUX, can I safely use my battery under
both LINUX APM and Windows APM (no matter which hard drive I am using)?
3. Finally, the peipa.essex.ac.uk web pages on TP and LINUX discuss the
difficulties with LINUX recognizing the TP floppy and harddrive and the need
for using the patched bootdisk, and then overwriting the kernel (created after
installation) with the patched kernel on the bootdisk. Adrian Clark also says
that this patched disk helps keep from "trashing" low memory. So...
- I am having trouble figuring out how to copy the bootdisk kernel to my
hard disk. I have installed the A disk series using the patched boot disk and
color144 rootdisk. I can boot up the hard disk using LILO. My attempts to mount
the bootdisk floppy and then copy the patched kernel over to hard disk are not
working. I can get the floppy to mount, but then "ls" shows nothing under /mnt.
- What is this "trashing" of low memory problem that Adrian mentions and is
there a patch out there somewhere that I can put into my kernel? If so, then
I don't need to use the "patched" boot disk once I'm installed and can create
my own kernel.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Joe Derrick
