Hi Arie,
I was all psyched up for my purchase of a AT&T KIT modem. I was told by
several people at First Source and ComputAbility, that the KIT modem
could be upgraded to V-Fast with Firmware. After reading the same from
several people here on our list, I decided to order it. Boy, was I in
for a shock when I called AT&T for support.....NO, the AT&T KIT can not
be upgraded to V-Fast or V-Turbo!! NO, there are no plans to do so,
now, or for the foreseeable future. The only thing that you can upgrade
is the error correction part of the modem. I also asked the AT&T tech
people about any plans to allow present owners of the KIT modems to
exchange the 14.4 with the future V-Fast models. The reply was , "no, no
plans!" I thanked him, and promptly called ComputAbility for a RA#.

Since my second choice was Megahertz XJ2144, I called them to inquire on
upgrade policies, if any existed. I was told that there was an exchange
policy recently implemented, that would allow the owner of a XJ2144 to
exchange their modem for a faster model (V-Turbo or V-Fast), whenever
they are made available. You would then just pay S/H and the difference
in price.

I can't stress enough how HAPPY I'm with my Megahertz XJ2144. It was a
snap to install and configure!! The XJack is a GREAT option!!

I ended up buying it from ComputAbility, since there was nothing wrong
with the AT&T modem, they gave me a hard time on the return...i was just
about to stomp on the darn thing, so i could tell them that YES...there
was something wrong with it! So I just went for the exchange to avoid
any more hassle. The price was right also.
