More on my mono screen damage

About a month ago I reported on an opaque orange blotch that appeared on my
mono screen after what seemed like minor jostling. I've since discovered
that the spot is temperature-sensitive. If I carry the machine outside in
the cold for any length of time, the spot expands and becomes more dense;
indoors, as the machine warms up, the spot contracts and becomes diffuse. I
can make it go away entirely by carefully applying extra heat, like from a
hair dryer. But the cure lasts only until the TP is chilled again.

I'm posting this in the hopes that one of you has some insights into LCD
screen construction, and might be able to suggest a more permanent solution
than carrying a blow-drier with me on trips (made extra absurd by the fact
that I am, well, "follicly-challenged", enough not to need the appliance for
its original purpose). I assume what's happened here is that some
liquid-crystal solution has leaked out of the panel and is sitting on one of
the glass panes, but only becomes visible when it is pinched between the
panes as they cool down and the gap contracts. Is there anything
user-serviceable here? As in, can I open up the sandwich, and clean off the
offending fluid? Or have I completely misunderstood the nature of the
problem? (Note: I bought the machine second-hand so the usual IBM warranty
doesn't apply.)

Thanks,

Tim
