MIT 6.805/STS085: Ethics and Law on the Electronic Frontier
in coordination with
Harvard Law School: Internet and Society
Fall Semester, 1999
Week 11, Nov. 15 - 19:
On Tuesday, there will be a test. On Wednesday we will meet at
Harvard for a session on spam control and other internet "private
action".
Tuesday class, Nov. 15: Test
-
Today there will be an in-class test (closed book). The purpose of this test is
simply to get you to review the required readings and the most
important points of the in-class discussions and presentations of
legal background. There
is a focus (although not exclusively) on the assigned court cases, so
be sure to review these. The test is short, straightforward and (I
hope) easy --
multiple choice and short-answer questions. I will not be surprised
if most people finish it in about 20 minutes.
Readings for Thursday (be prepared to discuss these in class):
- Browse the following web sites:
- Perkins Coie, Internet Case Digest: Spam -
http://www.perkinscoie.com/resource/ecomm/netcase/Cases-23.htm
- Blue Mountain Arts v. Microsoft - Complaint Filed December 8, 1998
http://www2.bluemountain.com/home/bluemountain_vs_Microsoft.html
- Margret Johnston,
Spam Watchdog Floats New Service Ideas, The Industry
Standard, October 7, 1999.
- Lawrence Lessig,
The Spam Wars, The Industry Standard, December 31, 1998.
Thursday's class: Meets at Harvard
- Spam control and vigilante action on the internet
