Tilt Sensor
The small silver ball on the top of the robot is a mecury tilt switch. This lets the robot know whether it is on level ground or not. The sensor returns a non-level reading if the robot is tilted at angle of more than about 20 degrees in any direction. When the robots are moving, the mecury shakes around, so the readings are very inacurate. In order to get good response, the robots need to stop for a second so the metal blob inside the sensor can settle down. (A classic example of things you won't find in data sheets...)
