This project demonstrates techniques for modeling and rendering urban environments. We procedurally generate a multiple level of detail geometric model of a city and utilize Monte Carlo ray tracing methods to render it. The rendered model contains approximately 500 million triangles and 10,000 light sources. Because the model is procedural, all elements such as light source specifications and geometric features, can easily be changed and evaluated on a large scale.
City Lights exhibits one application of our system -- visualization of cities at night. This video was submitted to SIGGRAPH 2001 Computer Animation Festival.
